In Ethiopia’s Oromiya Region, Nano Challa Coffee Washing Station has grown from a small operation to a critical player in the coffee industry. Established nine years ago by the Kata Muduga Union, the station now operates three sites in the Jimma Zone’s Geera District at altitudes ranging from 2007 to 2048 masl.
With 819 members and two additional processing mills, Nano Challa processes 2,700,000 kg of red cherry annually, equivalent to 567,000 kg of parchment coffee. The facility employs nine permanent staff and up to 180 seasonal workers. Plans include boosting processing capacity to 3,500,000 kg and improving waste management.
The station follows meticulous processing methods: sorting, flotation, pulping with a Penagos machine, and mechanical mucilage removal. Coffee is soaked, shade-dried, and finally dried on raised beds. It is stored in secure concrete facilities before shipment.
Nano Challa ensures coffee traceability through detailed documentation and maintains high standards with advanced water recycling. The cooperative supports environmental and social initiatives, including reforestation, school and road improvements, and farmer training programs.
Despite some financial challenges, Nano Challa remains committed to quality, sustainability, and community development.
