This coffee comes from the Alta Mogiana on the southern borders of Minas Gerais close to Sao Paulo State where the altitudes reach upto 1300 masl. The Alta Mogiana is a protected Geographic Indication and identifies the origin of coffees from this region for their unique profile and character.
Cocapil is a cooperative based in Ibarici, Alta Mogiana and it was founded in 2001 by Laerce Faleiros together with other producers from the area to better represent producers. In total there are now 1250 producers who are part of the cooperative. They have been working on vertically inter grating themselves in the supply chain and they started to export by themselves in 2016. They are also working hard to improve the facilities of the cooperative by increasing their warehouse space and milling capacity so they are able to store 300,000 bags and offer a greater range of services to the cooperative members.
The Cooperative also have programs and training for the producers looking at topics like the environment and sustainability. They are also looking to the future and engaging with local schools and to arrange tours and education for the students. Cocapil also have a women's producer group named 'Cerejas do café' which translates as 'Cherry of Coffee' and this group is led by Lais Peixoto Costa Faleiroswho is one of the senior traders at Cocapil.
Cocapil have created a range of coffees that they market at the Cooperative and this is their regional blend named Canario which is a blend based on the cup profile.
